Fusion X fabric developed by Quantum engineers and is exclusive to Quantum sail lofts.
Ideal for club and class racing yachts 20 - 40’ (6.5 - 12m).
High fiber counts in multiple directions distributes off axis loads into the sail.
Construction using the Ultrabond seam fusion process. Ultrabond eliminates seam elongation and perforation caused by stitching.
High efficiency fabric use and construction methods make Fusion X affordable
It is well known every sail fabric and construction method has it’s advantages. Originating from the 70’s and 80’s, the early generation cross cut “Mylar” and “Kevlar” sails evolved into laminated Tri Radial sails, controlling and distributing the various loads in the sail.
This revolutionised sails and fabrics, and is still a widely used and effective process, of which our “Fusion” product is a testament. The down side is a very complicated, labour intensive and expensive sail to design, engineer and build.
Further ahead into 2003, the introduction of the Isotropic Membrane in our Fusion M product saw sails individually engineered on a sail by sail basis. These sails have a network of fibers custom laid, then laminated, essentially forming an isotropic one piece structure. This is the ultimate in engineering, technology, strength and light weight. It is particularly effective and successful in larger boats and high load/ grand prix applications. Likewise, it very customized and relatively expensive being an absolute high performance sail.
Fusion X has been developed by Quantum engineers to offer a high tech, light, strong sail with excellent shape holding and longevity at an affordable price. By starting with a balanced Aramid base, then adding a matrix of off axis Twaron fibers the fabric allows cross cut construction, with the fiber matrix handling all vertical, bias and horizontal loads. Shrinkage is an age old problem with all sails built from laminated sail cloth.
Fusion X, being built from one uniform thickness laminate in cross cut orientation results in uniform shrinkage, and has less inclination to distort with age. Likewise, traditionally sewn seams “creep”, resulting in shape loss. Fusion X sails are fused together using the Ultrabond system, virtually eliminating seam creep. Reinforcing, reefing points, reef strapping, batten pockets and most major primary fixtures to the sail are attached using Ultrabond, eliminating stitch perforations and assuring a superior structure. The result is a smooth, structurally sound sail constructed efficiently with minimal waste. The value added with Fusion X is in the sail itself, not the rubbish bin!
More than a new cloth, Fusion X is a whole new way of engineering & building your new sail
As can be seen, the fiber matrix of Fusion X is dense, with significant load bearing fiber content on a multiple of axes.
Such a fabric distributes dynamic, ever changing loads into the sail. Every gust, every wave, every adjustment, every time!
First, we start with your boat, your needs and your expectations
As with every Quantum sail, a vast degree of technology, experience, skill and attention to detail are employed prior to any cloth being cut.
Using Quantum proprietory software, your boat’s data is entered and analysed in detail, ensuring not only the perfect fit but also the most efficient sail shape for your boat. Your displacement, stability ratio, rig type, mast bend, running rigging, rig tension, genoa tracks, local conditions, where you sail, the type of racing you do, what your goals are and how long you expect the sail to last and even your local rating system are all considered in the process. Once the design is complete, a comprehensive study into the projected loads will see the most suitable denier of Fusion X selected for your new sail. These panels are cut in addition with computer generated reinforcements, reefing points and locations, spreader and staunchon patch locations.
Construction is executed with absolute precision
Using the Ultrabond process, the sections are joined together forming an incredibly strong sail structure. The sail is given a 48 hour curing duration to ensure proper adhesion of all Ultrabond joins. Carefully engineered reinforcing is subsequently added, producing a sail with minimal stitch perforations, maximizing strength.
The result - a smooth, strong, long lasting sail like no other ...exclusively by Quantum

Unmatched attention to detail, the finest techniques from world class sailmakers and quality hardware complete every Fusion X sail. Nothing short of perfection is acceptable to build the best sails. Backed by Quantum’s limited 12 month manufacturing warranty, Fusion X is available at all Quantum lofts worldwide.
