Asymmetrical Racing SpinnakersAsymmetrical Racing Spinnakers

Quantum has a long standing reputation for excellence in the design of offwind sails. The current symmetric spinnaker is born of extensive race experience and a unique Wind Tunnel testing program. The first of its kind, the program uses a radically different methodology to provide usable real world results. Quantum has embarked on an ambitious program to update and integrate this type of testing into the design process. The balance of geometry and shaping has been refined to new levels, and designs are tuned more carefully to target wind range and angles.

This complex, multi-panel tri-radial design allow for more precise alignment of loads. Increased number of panels enables the use of three dimensional shaping, creating the smoothest flying shape. Narrow head gores reduce diagonal load on seams. Fanned radial patches minimize weight at corners. Corner reinforcements are spray glued for maximum bonding surface area and smoothness. Numbers are inked on instead using insignia to minimize weight and smooth center sections. Leech cords are standard.

Shaping and Structure
True 3-dimensional shaping through Quantum's proprietary design software is the difference. The amount of ellipticity is controlled from top to bottom through shoulder darts, multiple head panel shapes, horizontal broadseams, and center seam shaping. Rocked horizontal panels make more efficient use of the fabric's stronger warp threads. Panels are joined with adhesives then sewn. Shapes are checked with templates.

Plied Radial Corner Reinforcements
The first four or five radials in the clew are more narrow and stepped up to the next weight. This reinforces the clews without increasing overall weight.

Design specifics
Designs are tailored to expected usage, and shapes and structure can run from special light air VMG, to full size running spinnakers with everything in between.

Fabrics
The spinnaker's design dictates the style and weight of fabric. Nylon and polyester spinnaker materials ranging from .5oz. to 2.2oz. are the most common. Other Mylar® coated spinnaker fabrics are used in special applications.
Quantum always matches the fabric of the leech tapes with the sail to prevent shrinkage and save weight.

Leech lines
Quantum incorporates leech lines to handle shock loading from
sudden collapses and refills.

Hand finished corners
All corners are finished with webbed-on stainless steel rings for better load distribution and light weight.

Options to consider

Duffel style launch bag
A custom launching bag that is shaped like a duffle bag (in a rectangle) to facilitate sets and easier packing. A must on larger boats.

ATN dousing sleeve
A custom built, high quality dousing sleeve appropriate for use on larger boats. It isdeal for short handed sailing or offshore passages. The ATN was originally developed for use in the BOC and other short-handed distances races.

Custom graphics
Artwork is scanned, computer-cut, and built into the the designed shape of the sail in the form of an inlay. In some instances spinnaker graphics can be applied on the sail using paint or ink.
