Fusion X racing mainsail
Fusion X is a simple, elegant version of Quantums revolutionary Fusion technology that is setting new standards for performance and durability. Intended for small to medium size boat applications (up to 40 or slightly larger for light air use), it is built from high modulus aramid fibers, and uses the same unique, proprietary principles behind Fusion Ms adaptable, smart sail structure. Fusion X is not a load path sail. Fusion X s smart structure integrates loadings throughout the whole sail so that loadings are shared evenly. Gone is the principle of trying to place fibers along primary stress paths. The benefits are huge:
Incredibly smooth
Easier to trim
Wider effective wind range
Dramatically more durable
FUSION X Mainsails are engineered like no other composite sail.
The anatomy of a Fusion X Racing mainsail
Smart Structure Fusion X uses the same revolutionary structural principles introduced in Quantums Fusion M custom membrane construction. The difference is that instead of being made on a sail by sail basis, with a unique fiber mapping, Fusion X relies on pre-formed sections of dense, fiber rich, high modulus aramid fibers. Instead of being built using the traditional load path model, Fusion X sails utilize an integrated fiber network that address sail loadings as a whole, instead of attempting to place fiber as efficiently as possible along the primary load paths. Fusion X smart structure uses a more sophisticated finite element analysis, which recognizes the ever changing nature of sail loads, and the need to adapt to a wide range of changes and demands on the sail structure. Fusion X is the first sail to address the reality that loads exist in all directions at any given point. It also relies on a new understanding of the way the fiber network works together to support overall sail loadings, including those along the primary load path. Fusion X s complex, dense, fiber matrix allows each part of the structural system to support the rest, keeping any one part of the sail from becoming overloaded and distorted. Fusion s smart structural system is isostrain instead of catenar y, or load path, which means main X there is no distortion, but instead, consistent deformation in all directions. Sail shape changes evenly and uniformly, making trim easier, and there is no localized distortion to permanently deform and degrade sail shape. The result is a sail that is easier to get the most out of, which lasts longer.
State of the Art lamination Fusion X sails typically have nearly twice the fiber for a given weight of any other method of sail construction. The acheive this remarkable strength to weight ratio through the use of aerospace lamination techniques. Assembled using high-end commercial techniques, they are the only laminates built using the heat and pressure necessary to achieve optimum strength to weight ratio without reducing fiber content. Thermoset instead of thermo-molded adhesives are used, so that the laminate bond polymerizes, creating a cross-linked molecular stricture with dramatically better sheer strength. When delamination is not an option, Fusion X is the answer.
